WA Disappointed At Sinking Of The ARC

RugbyWA Chief Executive Peter O’Meara has expressed the organisation’s disappointment at the Australian Rugby Union’s decision to terminate the Australian Rugby Championship (ARC), but says he understands the rationale.

“The ARC was just what Australian Rugby needed. It was popular amongst the players and the rugby fraternity here in Perth, and it was an excellent platform for opportunity and development,” O’Meara said.

“The rugby was also of a high standard and very entertaining,” he said.

“But I guess it couldn’t go on losing millions of dollars each year, and we appreciate that,” he said.

“However, we hope that in the not too distant future a new, more sustainable national tournament rises from the ashes.”

“The players want it, the fans want it and Australian Rugby needs it.”

O’Meara said RugbyWA looked forward to working with the ARU and other key stakeholders in developing a more affordable national competition.

Well thats settled then, if we need it - better get rid of that then.

You're pretty much on the money there AUSS, it cost about 4.7 million dollars and the ire of Randwick, Sydney Uni and all the other big wigs in NSWRU. The latter being the greater cost!

Yes - the ARU board is made up of reps from NSW and QLD - WA and SA don't have votes - think the ACT may have 1 vote pretty sure NSW and QLD have either 2 or 3 each - other instresting point is that QLD has been bankrupt a couple of times - and guess who has bailed them out - whole thing is wrong - don't know why it is still so - and is the main reason that people like O'Neil left (he was pushed and didn't jump !) - John Connelly didn't get enough support to even contemplate staying on after the RWC (am guessing he was put under pressure to have certain NSW and QLD players under generous ARU contracts because they certainly weren't there on merit ) and why Robbie will earn every cent of what I hope is an extremely generous salary - am guessing that the whole setup is still a mess = would love someone to post the ARU accounts because they are certainly crying poor at the moment - The ARU could have entertainment value this year iff it doesn't drivve us insane - while someone attempts get the upper hand and send it hopefully into a new and different direction.
