It ensures the Force didn't win.
#6 (Brown) went off his feat. While it didn't look like an immediate penalty, keep in mind the Blues tackler released the player very quickly, giving his team a chance at a turnover. But they were cut off by brown.
If the Blues tackler didn't release so quickly, or went to ground with Cowan we would have been fine. Maybe Cowan should of hit the ball up a lot harder?
Or if Cowan didn't immediately go to ground before his support was ready...
In the context of the match though, there had been a bit of leeway allowed with the support regaining their feet to participate in the ruck. I'm sure the ref thought the tactic of pick 'n' drive was anti competitive and thought the game needed to finish open, but there were far worse rucks than that let go.
I watched the replay several times tonight you can clearly see Brown was in contact with Cowan as the tackle was made, Cowan went down, Brown followed him, and ended up on hands and feet before the whistle was blown (and it was a quick penalty) he regained his feet quicker than the tackler, and nobody else had joined contact before he got there. I say he was legitimately there, but the ref (obviously) disagrees.
I'm sick of arguing shit ref calls, because the plain fact is, we should have killed them off long before Jono was marched for a similarly bullshit penalty. We can't do this every week, it's time for our boys to take the ref out of the equation by completely outplaying our opponents and not fading out in the last 10-15 minutes.
But yes Jazza's, I think it was a bullshit penalty!
If he was bond to the person with the ball, there should be no problem with going off his feet...
We've had some goods from these types of rulings (Beale vs the Boks) and some pain in this instance. So all things being equal, we really shouldn't complain because shutting down the game like that is anti-competitive. We should've got 4 chasers ready and had Sheehan or JO'C put it high and long. Concede a penalty inside their half or pressure them into a mistake. That way even if they had somehow found a way to get a try we would've still got 1 point while potentially doubling our gain if we were successful to 4 points. Easy said than done I suppose.
Medication time at the nut house I think Palitu
