Kiwis snarl over team full of mongrels
Quite funny reading this...
Quote:
The New Zealand papers were full of wee wee and wind yesterday. After John Connolly's call for his Wallabies to show a bit more mongrel, they, in the eyes of the Kiwi media outlets, had suddenly turned into just that - low-down mongrels.
There were editorials about how the Wallabies had resorted to "dubious tactics" in deliberately targeting All Blacks captain Richie McCaw. They were lambasted for their aggression, for trying to "wipe the floor with McCaw". Even the old headline favourite "Ocker Shocker" got a run - but this time with a different slant.
The Wallabies are not exactly accustomed to this sort of venom. Usually when they go over to New Zealand, they have to accept being called cream-puffs, nancy boys, soft centres, losers, big sheilas … anything but intimidating standover men.
Admittedly, the horrible spear tackle effected by Lote Tuqiri on McCaw gave the New Zealand media legitimate reason to try to turn the Wallabies into bad boys. Nonetheless, one would imagine Connolly would be pleased he had at last witnessed a Wallabies team showing a desire to hold its ground.
That would give Connolly hope he can produce some sort of miracle at next year's World Cup.
