Legend Gary!
It’s official - Gary Mickle of the Palmyra Rugby Union Football Club is a legend.
Gary was crowned the metropolitan winner of the Department of Sport and Recreation’s Local Legends competition this week after being nominated by his club through the radio 720 ABC Perth website.
Having served the club for decades and holding a world record for the most 1st Grade games played, Gary is no stranger to achievement. However he also acknowledges that the friends he has made and the laughs he has shared are as important as the silverware in his trophy cabinet.
But it was his instrumental role this year in helping Palmyra’s 5th Grade come from behind to take the Premiership that really elevated him to Legend status and earned him a standing ovation as he left the field for the final 10 minutes of the game.
No small task considering he is in his 69th year!
Gary’s club mates say it’s hard to imagine anyone playing sport at this age, let alone unrestricted rugby where he tackles and is tackled by people nearly a quarter his age.
They say most can only dream of still playing rugby at age 40, let alone 69.
In their words, Gary is “an absolute legend of WA rugby”. And now he has the official title to prove it.

Cripes, I hope this does't make the Papers!. His wife June doesnt know he's been playing for the last thirty years.

I had the pleasure of refereeing him in that grand final - hadn't realised he was still playing actually. Very impressive that he played all but the last 10 minutes or so, then didn't want to be substituted when I got the call from the side!
Even more impressive to me is the he's a prop! Someone of that vintage still able to play prop - deadset legend!
Onya Gary!
-
he should have stuck to sailing
onya Gary
ps Fulvio, half those games he played wearing the Nedlands Royal blue
-
I was going to say prop is the only position you can play at 69 but then I thought...

straight through to the keeper

Congrats mate, i know you have occasionally been on this site, so if you read this "how you going mate"...
"June, i am just going to the club for a few pints"; never mentioned he was playing a game before the pints, eh Fulvio...
