Hi XXX,
Thanks for taking the time to write to me, and for so eloquently presenting your concerns regarding the axing of an Australian Super Rugby team.
As you will no doubt be aware, RUPA was steadfastly against the removal of an Australian Super Rugby team, and was vocal both publicly and privately about the concerns we held regarding this course of action. RUPA has also taken unprecedented steps behind closed doors to hold the ARU accountable, and has kept our members in the loop regarding our actions at all times, being guided by a Board of Directors which features nine current players. Ultimately, however, it was not within our power to prevent this action from being taken.
We are in constant communications with all players who have been affected by this, including all players who are leaving Perth to play either overseas or for other Australian teams, players who do not wish to leave Western Australia and players at other Clubs who have been affected by a sudden ‘flooding’ of the marketplace which affects their squad status and chances of playing.
Many of your concerns listed below are issues which we have raised directly with both the ARU and the Clubs affected, as well as continuing with our Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations behind closed doors; these are progressing well, however neither party has any intention of allowing them to be negotiated through the media, particularly in a year in which negative stories about Rugby have dominated press coverage.
We are encouraged by Mr. Forrest’s plans for the IPRC and will continue to work behind the scenes with him and his team to support a competition which will facilitate a greater number of professional opportunities for Australian players.
Rest assured that although we are unable to disclose all of our activity, the wellbeing of the players remains our absolute priority and we are providing all the support necessary.
Best wishes,
Pete Fairbairn
Communications Manager
I replied back stating that they need to take control of the negotiations as the ARU have not taken any steps to look towards the future direction of the game and they have been outsmarted.
