IMHO, if the offence takes place in, for example, an International match then the ban should be for a certain number of matches at that level (in this case, he would miss 8 test matches).

agreed, you offend at international level. you should be banned from international level. as well as other grades. just because you cant play in one grade shouldnt mean you can be relegated to another
What mystifies me is why he thought it was necessary. Why do any of the Boks indulge in this rubbish? It's not as though they lack the skills to win fairly.
8 weeks? I was thinking a year. That's a bannable offense, not a suspension. Maaan. Burger is so very very VERY lucky. It was such a stupid thing to do.
Burger got 8 weeks like Parrise, but Quinlan got 12 a couple of months ago and Neil Best got 18 weeks last year.
The 18 weeks was supposed to be some sort of deterent to stop others gouging. Doesn't seem to have worked. Maybe someone should get a season-long ban and then see whether that stops it.
18 weeks to one player isnt really a deterrent. it could be interpreted as the event in question was really serious. attach a minumum 2 year ban to it. then we'll see how many people offend...
i dont think 2 years is heavy handed either. it's serious shit. you can damage someone's eyesight for the rest of their life. not just the remainder of the 80 minutes.
Blimey - I thought calling for a season was harsh; although thinking about it, two years is what you get for a positive drugs test.
I'd say that the long sentence should only apply for a second offense, though. I wouldn't want a player banned for two years if he has a spot-less disciplinary record and accidentally made contact with someone's face/eyes.
A season (in Super 14) isn't that long. The offender needs to understand that such activity is unprofessional and unwanted. An actual year includes tests and Tri-Nations, something they wouldn't want to miss out on.
Fair enough. Mind you, if it was accidental, a fine or a week or two is sufficient. With Burger, he should easily get a year or two.
intentional contact with an oposistion player's eyes should have a minumum 2 year ban
