So, just how closely related are panthers and cougars by the way?

Yes and no. There is no species called the Panther.
Cats are the family Felinae, of which there are two sub-families, Pantherinae (the big cats) and Felidae (which includes domestic cats, the Lynx, Ocelot, Cheetah and Cougar).
All big cats are technically Panthers (the Lion is Panthera Leo, the Tiger is Panthera Tigris, the Leopard is Panthera Pardus, the Jaguar is Panthera Onca). Alison's avatar looks like a Black Jaguar, which is the animal most people associate with 'Panther'.
However, the Cougar has a subspecies, the Florida Cougar, which, although usually fairly light in colour does have a recessive black gene and is sometimes known, incorrectly, as the Panther.
So the answer is either a different sub-family of cat, or they are the same thing.
P.S. Do not look up 'Florida Cougar' on Google!
