Good choice - hold off as long as you can as the prices will likely drop rapidly as more devices similarly spec'd are coming onto teh market ..
What do you need it for?
iPads are shithouse
A mate got an Acer Iconia 500 recently and I had a quick go at it. Was very fast. $600 including cover. It seems to have the same specs and a number of others. Just pick one with a low cost
Take 2 and have a lie down TIF
Don't know much about the non-apple tablets, but have heard that some are running windows........I'd avoid them as windows touch interface just leaves me frustrated (but that impression comes from some years ago) I'd look at the android ones if you're that anti-apple, the open source nature of the platform means a bazillion apps onto the future
dunno, bit before my time dude, did you ask them when they were living next door?
OK guys - maybe you can help me here....I am looking for a device like a laptop or a smart phone or a 'Pad or tablet' that will work in bright sunlight? I am a PE teacher and we are being asked to assess and report on our classes 'on the hoof' - rather than as we always have done - by writing stuff about our kids when we finish our lessons with them.
Problem is - none of the things I have (a laptop and a smart-phone) work in bright sunlight?
I use a Kindle - which is brilliant in the bright light - but is basically a read-only device.
Any ideas?

Got the XOOM and so far happy with it. Carried it on our Round New Zealand tour and it worked a treat. Received an update to the operating system (android 3.1) that increases the XOOM's functionality (now allows use of the sd card slot as well the micro usb).
Happy to answer any questions.
If NZ choke again and Australia take Bill home will you start supporting the Wallabies?
i have proudly ordered a flytouch 3 from china yesterday ('Bout 8 day delivery they say), runs android apps and flash 10 stuff. has WiFi, 512ram, 16gig memory built in + 1xmicrosd slot and 2x USB slots, has built in gps and also supplies external gps aerial and has hdmi out put all for the low price of 215 US Dollars!! for bout 1/3 of ipad i have to give it a go, Xoom is an awesome tablet but i dont have that kinda coin to spare and the only major extra with a xoom is 3g capability, but most smartphones are WiFi hotspots these days (HTC are Definatly)
You may not get access to the android market with a Chinese import as that is only available to licensed versions of Android. There are ways around it - but it involves a bit of effort.
However, there are other non official android markets and direct download of apps which may be enough.
