SYDNEY premiership clubs could face mergers, relegations or even closure in an Australian Rugby Union-driven shake-up of grassroots rugby.
Viability of club rugby structures will come under review by the ARU next year, along with its funding of Sydney and Brisbane clubs.
ARU deputy chief executive Matt Carroll said yesterday that clubs needed to "take a hard look" at the future.
"If you go down the path of professional rugby, you have to be ready for the costs involved ... or otherwise you go broke," Carroll said.
Conclusion : The ARU are seriously worried about money
Yes, well...
Once any organisation starts cost cutting, it is amazing how they get a taste for it. It will be interesting to see if Petersen echoes his "We are disappointed but fiscally this is the proper decision" when they cut the couple of million $ that NSW and Q'ld share for player development - if you get rid of one development vehicle, surely best to start from a blank slate rather than go back to a status quo ante that you know didn't give the results you wanted.
So if they are pumping a couple of million into NSW and QLD rugby - wouldn't that and a few less plane trips (less games) cover the cost of the ARC
As I see it with the planes and whatnot Australia is too big a country. Can't we just sell the Northern Territory and South Australia off to the Japanese like they did in Reckless Ned. The we'll all be much closer together and we'll also finally be rid of South Australia.
They could tow Tasmania over to NZ as well.
