Population-wise you couldn't realistically have another South Island NZ team the Highlanders are already really starting to struggle. The only places you could host it would be North Harbour or Bay of Plenty.

While not against the expansion of the S14, I'm finding it difficult to understand the desire for expansion and another Oz team, with the *very* recent and common complaints that Oz rugby is stretched too thin by "a fourth team" (i.e. the Force).

I don't ever think the SARU will leave. I doubt the Northern Hemisphere will want them (as travel costs will increase and clubs already hate giving up players for the 6 Nations little own 7). I do think traditional rugby tours with midweek games would be the coolest way to go particularly between Aust and NZ. Best for player development and at least if we are getting pumped by the All Blacks we can look forward to the development matches.

Tragic, the hypothetical is on both SA leaving and the acceptance of the standard dropping from what we know now to somewhere between S14 and ARC, basically NPC level I guess.
Any change in team numbers (not including a withdrawn SA) would lead to uneven standards as described re Japan or PI.

True James but you also have the strongest team in S14 in the South Island too.

I'm not saying it should happen mind you, just presenting the alternative IF SA were to go.
