ok I know i'm going to get some cr@p responses to this but it is a serious question.
On a Saturday, what are the best bars / restaurants and where are they ? Afternoon 'till 6pm and then 10 pm onwards. Hotel is central not outskirts. Any places focussed on rugby/Brumbies ?
King O'Malleys in Civic is not a bad pub for pre and post game drinking. They will have S14 games on TV inside, bit of room to sit out in the quasi beer garden in the mall and its very close to where the buses go to Canberra stadium
Was taken to the Wig and Pen by a mate over there when I was over the Force Brumbies game last year.
They do a very good microbrew there. But I am not sure if they have the rugby on.
King OMalleys isnt bad either, and gets going a bit later on.
There's a pub called All Bar Nun in O'Connor which used to be the Brumbies Bar - bit of a trek out of Civic but they always had buses to the game.
Debacle on Lonsdale St, Bradden is great with heaps of different beers and good food, about 10 mins walk from Civic centre. Great on a Sat arvo and when we were there last year, they advertised buses to Brumbies, also have big screen.
Wig and Pen on Alinga St is a local boutique brewery, bit dark and cosy inside but has tables outside too
Kingston is great place for restaurants and bars, about 10 mins by taxi from Civic, but is basically a block lined with restaurants on the outside, and then Green Square on the inside which has several pubs and clubs, including Fibbers where the Brumbies always used to go after games
Mooseheads was the club to go to in Civic but I've never actually made it there!
Have a look at eatingwa.com.au (the Canberra Restaurants link), for some restaurants and reviews and canberra.citysearch.com.au for bar and club reviews

Ok, that's enough serious answers...

Pop into the South Pacific Rugby club. It's just around the corner from King O'Malleys near the public library in East Row (Don't be put off by the dimly lit stairs leading down into the basement)
There are pool tables, TV screens and loud music. Definately worth a look if you haven't been there before. More fun than the Akuna Club.
I popped in after the Wales v Tonga World Cup match in '03 (with my Welsh father-in-law in tow) what a hoot that was... but that's another story.
thank you everyone (well almost everyone)
