For years Cross has dreamed of this day, his date with destiny
Wayne Smith | September 10, 2008
RYAN Cross was sound asleep when Australia's Stirling Mortlock booted a pressure penalty goal against South Africa in August 2000 to clinch the Tri-Nations Cup for the first time.
Mad rugby fan though he was, Cross was dreaming of another trophy that only a few hours later he would be playing for, as a member of the Sydney Roosters side facing the Brisbane Broncos in the NRL grand final.
Mortlock's last-gasp heroics in Durban happened too late in the night to make the Sydney newspapers but Cross awoke to a story about himself in the The Sunday Telegraph in which Andrew Johns called on the national selectors to pick the 20-year-old Roosters rookie in Australia's rugby league World Cup squad.

Cross faces ultimate test of code alliances

For a bloke who merely “dabbled in league”, Wallaby Ryan Cross still couldn't escape reminders of the 13-man-a-side code yesterday.
Cross, 28, was today celebrating what he thinks will be the biggest moment since his switch two years ago after being named in the starting XV for the Wallabies' Tri-Nations decider against New Zealand at Brisbane on Saturday night.
But the league references still hovered.
He replaced the dumped Timana Tahu - another league convert.
Then Cross admitted he had a friendly wager with Wallabies teammate Lote Tuqiri - yep, a former leaguie - on the outcome of Friday night's NRL finals clash between their respective ex-teams, Brisbane and the Sydney Roosters.

BOKKE“Let me put it this way, A Springbok team contains Afrikaners, Englishmen, coloureds and blacks. It has parochial foes in Bulls, Sharks, Stormers, Cheetahs and Lions. It is a recipe for war! Yet in all the years of John Smit’s captaincy, there has never been one unhappy customer, not one voice of rebellion against his leadership. He is the glue that holds the Springboks together. The man is a legend!”- Jake White
