Fears over mauling laws after player dies of broken neck
Bret Harris | June 26, 2008
THE death of an Argentine winger last Saturday has highlighted the danger of collapsing the maul, a practice which will be legalised under the experimental law variations to be trialled worldwide from August 1.
Juan Cruz Migliore died from injuries, including a broken neck, suffered when a maul collapsed on him while playing in a club game in Buenos Aires.
The death brings into question the ELVs, which will allow the collapsing of the maul in the global trial, although it was not permitted in the Super 14 series.
The new law is designed to free up the ball, but Migliore's death serves as a warning. Wallabies re-starts coach Michael Foley said he hoped the new law did not compromise player safety.

BOKKE“Let me put it this way, A Springbok team contains Afrikaners, Englishmen, coloureds and blacks. It has parochial foes in Bulls, Sharks, Stormers, Cheetahs and Lions. It is a recipe for war! Yet in all the years of John Smit’s captaincy, there has never been one unhappy customer, not one voice of rebellion against his leadership. He is the glue that holds the Springboks together. The man is a legend!”- Jake White
From differing circumstances though.....
Sad that it may be used for political reasons however to try to kill the ELV's....
I was never really happy with allowing collapsing the maul though...

Not being a forward I know I'm pretty clueless about the intricacies of a maul, but aren't there some pretty strict controls on the way the maul is collapsed....is that in order for it to be done safely?
C'mon the![]()

it will make a huge difference when players are expecting the maul to go down, whenever a maul is collapsed nobody is expecting it because it is illegal. With the ELVs the players will be trained and every time there is a maul they will be expecting it to go down soon and they should be ready.
any collapsed maul can be dangerous though
any contact sport could be considered dangerous. It will be interesting to see the fallout from this regarding the ELV's.
It is sad that a player lost their life though
