The Brumby Runners have overpowered their NSW counterparts, the Junior Waratahs, 29-13 at Viking Park this afternoon.

The New South Welshmen skipped out to an 8-0 lead midway through the first term through a Dave Dennis try and penalty goal to flyhalf David Paurini before the Runners responded with three first-half tries to lead 17-8 at the break.

The Runners began the second half in the best possible fashion when flanker Sokai Tai burst through from the kick-off receipt and combined with Tevita Metuisula to put prop Jerry Yanuyantawa over to score in the left corner.

Following his hatrick last week against the Australian Barbarians, winger Alfi Mafi crossed for the Runners final try in the 61st minute before Junior Waratahs replacement Michael McDougal touched down with four minutes remaining to bring up the final 29-13 result.

Note Steven Noriega at 3 prop....It's a name well known in ACT and international rugby circles. Patricio Noriega was an Argentine Test player, a foundation ACT Brumbies prop and played for the Wallabies 24 times... Good to see the young champ at the Brumby Runners...

"I came here with my girlfriend to visit her mum," Noriega Jnr said."Then I was talking to some Brumbies talent scouts and they offered me a position in the Brumbies Academy.

"My goal is to play for Australia. Australia is definitely my home and it has given my family everything."

But the imposing hooker has more than rugby on his mind. He plans to begin studying medicine at ANU in July.

When he broke the news of his Academy selection, Noriega Snr could not contain his excitement and joy.

"My dad was off his mind, he couldn't believe it.

"He is really happy for me and doesn't mind I'm staying over here. He thinks it is an awesome opportunityfor me."

Academy mentor Owen Finegan played in Brumbies and Wallabies forward packs with Noriega Snr and is now coaching his son.

I think its great that these 2nd tier players are getting game time against each other.Its a shame the force dont get the same opportuinty,instead our players go to sydney to play for clubs sides.That is no way to develop the next tier of players for the force and will only ensure that WA will not progress as quickly as it should.The ARC was the ideal stepping stone......Does WA still have the North South East West comp,at least that is something.

QLD and NSW 2nd XV have played each other twice, and have had a few visits from kiwi teams as well

The Force academy needs to tour on East Coast and NZ... it’s the only way... perhaps the sponsors could spend a little of the cash Gits left behind on the boys...

It’s the academy programs that give the Super squads real depth. A good development program will keep younger players satisfied with their development, while they wait possibly a few years before getting a run in the Super 14...

Academy's pretty good, but the problem is a Tyranny of distance thing, it just costs far too much to get them decent matches when they (theoretically) are the best team in WA after the

Probably because it has been done to death over the years Mud, but Gigs is on the money.
The only real alternative (within Australia) would be an extended tour of the East Coast playing the three provincial A XV's and organise to play at least one club each in Brisbane, Sydney and Canberra and maybe a VRU and SARU selection. Probably take a month and would need to be on at this time of year as the Eastern Clubs are building towards the start of season.

It would be great to get the Force Academy over on an East Coast tour.... If they link up with a NZ academy touring they could play in Australia... The more experience the better. I hope the Force put some cash into the boys of the future... next season...

Who would you play in Singapore? Academy players want to play against their peers... They want to compete for Australian jerseys relevant to their age group...

Look at young Colby Faingaa at 17 and competing as in a tough role as the inside loosie against the NSW Juniors effectively the NSW B team after the Tahs... That’s got to give the kid real confidence and development…
