RugbyWA Chief Executive Peter O’Meara has expressed the organisation’s disappointment at the Australian Rugby Union’s decision to terminate the Australian Rugby Championship (ARC), but says he understands the rationale.
“The ARC was just what Australian Rugby needed. It was popular amongst the players and the rugby fraternity here in Perth, and it was an excellent platform for opportunity and development,” O’Meara said.
“The rugby was also of a high standard and very entertaining,” he said.
“But I guess it couldn’t go on losing millions of dollars each year, and we appreciate that,” he said.
“However, we hope that in the not too distant future a new, more sustainable national tournament rises from the ashes.”
“The players want it, the fans want it and Australian Rugby needs it.”
O’Meara said RugbyWA looked forward to working with the ARU and other key stakeholders in developing a more affordable national competition.
