Schoolboy matches as QR Reds' curtain raisers

School rugby matches will figure prominently as curtain raisers at Suncorp Stadium during the QR Reds 2009 season.

The QR Reds 2nd XV clash against arch-rivals the Junior Waratahs will be the curtain raiser for the Reds' first home game, against the Cheetahs on March 1, but the remaining five Suncorp dates will feature some of the state's best schoolboy talent in action.

GPS rivals Anglican Church Grammar School and St Josephs College, Gregory Terrace is arguably the marquee match-up of the five, being played on April 18 before the Lions clash.

Terrace also squares off against Marist College Ashgrove, who get to test their skills against a team from outside their usual AIC competition.

QR Reds Curtain Raisers at Suncorp Stadium for 2009:

    Sunday 1 March v Cheetahs – Reds 2nd XV v Junior Waratahs

    Saturday 14 March v Sharks – Iona 1st VX v Padua 1st XV

    Saturday 28 March v Chiefs – Downlands 1st XV v St Laurence 1st XV

    Saturday 18 April v Lions – Churchie 1st XV v Terrace 1st XV

    Saturday 2 May v Brumbies – Marist Ashgrove 1st XV v Terrace 1st XV

Saturday 16 May v Hurricanes – St Pauls 1st XV v Ormiston College 1st XV

im a ex lauries boys, i would have loved the chance to play at suncorp like these guys are, slightly suprised no Nudgee there though.

St Laurences vs Marist Ashgrove pulls around 6'000 people to the annual game, its a massive event with many of the old boys like Dan Crowley, John Connoly, John Eales etc all turning up to support.

Another marketing coup by Reds management
Get all the Toffs to the game and sell them cold pies, chiko rolls and beer with water in it

How about some running rugby from the attack coach?

Curtain raisers what a great idea, far more interesting then watching the boys warming up........a regular feature in the ol'days they were.

many of those scools have players which will go on to higher honours in rugby union, so its also good to give the boys a taste of a more professional-esque game as well.

It will also be good for the two competitions to play against each other, Brisbanes school rugby scene is dominated by GPS and AIC, with GPS been the stronger but AIC also has a few top quality schools as well. There are some long term rivalries between the school but since they are in different comps they dont often get to play.
