COTTESLOE RUFC OFF TO SINGAPORE FOR SEVENS TOURNAMENT

The Cottesloe RUFC Sevens squad will fly out next week to take part in the 62nd Singapore Cricket Club Rugby Sevens Tournament, to be held on the 7-8 November.

Over 20 teams from around the world will participate in 2009, with some teams using the tournament as a warm up to the IRB Sevens. The South African 7s team participate along with Scotland and the USA Eagles.

In making the Shield Final and finishing sixth overall in the 22 team competition last year Cott are looking forward to another strong showing. After wins over the Singapore Barbarians and Thailand Barbarians, Cott defeated the Dubai Arab Emirates side (which competes in the Dubai IRB Sevens), 32-12 in the Semi Final.

The Blues then faced the daunting prospect of playing the Scottish national side in the final of the Shield competition. Despite holding their own throughout, the Scots proved too strong in the end to complete a 19-7 win. Some of the other countries represented next week will be Japan, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, and New Zealand.

The Blues have been training hard over the last few weeks and are quietly confident they will do well with a strong squad chosen. Captain Ryan Westaway, who has played a lot of Sevens in the USA for Chicago and Las Vegas, said it was a great opportunity for players to play in a different country to showcase some different skills in a different style of rugby."The squad has come together really well over the last few weeks especially after just playing in the Grand Final just over a month ago. We will rely heavily on experienced players Dave Cloete, Tim Parks and Todd Edwards". One player to watch out for will be Karl Leary, the speedster of the team Westaway said."But despite the quality of the opposition we think we can perform to a high standard."

    The squad is:

    1. Ryan Westaway (c)
    2. Karl Leary
    3. Matthew Battishall
    4. Tim Parks
    5. David Cloete
    6. Josh Gugich
    7. Regan Johns
    8. Tom Santangeli
    9. Todd Edwards
    10. Ben Mitchell
    11. Nick Haining

    Coach – Ian Fowler
    Manager – Craig Fairhall

    Bali 7s or Bali 10s?

You might have lost more of them than you thought.

Cottesloe are sending up a top outfit by the look of it, and should be right up there with the top four at least.

Southern Lions should do very well also. They have snaffled Palmyra's specialist 7s Coach from last year as well as two star players from us. From what I've heard they have been training hard for over two months and have some sound attacking tactics organised. They have some exceptional speedsters in their squad, and some excellent defensive patterns.

Palmyra are not so fortunate, with some very new additions to their team, and only one of last year's squad available. We've only been able to start training as a squad about three weeks due to player work commitments, and four withdrawals over the last two weeks haven't helped. The players have been more or less organising their own training, which is a worry.

Still we'll give it our best shot, and if we make the finals of the bowl competition we'll be doing OK in the circumstances.

    Good luck cott+other WA teams.

If there is a decent prize pool and they make the finals, they can just call up their loyal clubmen Brownie and Swanny!

I think Fulvio may be up to his old tricks and feining injury before kick-off.

You can put money on Pally being a useful outfit.

Southern Lions are wasting their money. There is no upside in them attending a tournament of this stature. They have bigger issues to focus on at home.

Oh ye of little faith, Oracle. Why would I lie to you?

As far as I'm concerned Southern Lions have the right to spend their money however they see fit, and it's up to them to make the judgment call as to whether it's money well spent.

Anyway, the proof will be in the pudding after this weekend. If they end up in the top six of the competition and play for the Ablitt Cup it will be a huge boost for their ambitions to play in the premier competition locally.

With the coach and players they have acquired they are well on their way.

Fulvio, you are starting to sound like a man who has just returned from a particularly boozy Melbourne Cup lunch and has the first stage of dementure!

I don't drink during working hours, and dimentia is spelt D.E.M.E.N.T.I.A.

Further, gambling, and horse racing in particular, is not included amongst my wide array of vices.

I stand by almost everything I say and some of what I don't say.

You're probably right about the dementia.
