Well,Nedlands are. Or may be it's their president, the redoubtable Hansie. Or may be it's their coaches, as Hansie, when pressured, is wont to suggest. Or may be it's something more sinister.
Whatever, the fact remains that Neddies are afraid to play night games, not with strange men, and not outside the confines of their bedrooms, in any event.
Nedlands won't play under lights. They argue it gives their opposition some mysterious kind of unfair advantage. Everyone but Neddies players, it seems, are born with cats' eyes, according to that argument, and to play under lighting which meets international standards for night contact sports might be alright for everyone else, but not for these cherubine, swaddled, rugby petals.
Never mind that they train under, and are used to, lighting so bad that it would challenge a lynx with night vision glasses. Never mind that they have a first grade team brimming with players who, before they were bought, cut their teeth playing provincial, national and international rugby under lights all their careers. Never mind their proud, if hollow, boast that they are the bestest, smartest most progressive and fantastical club ever, ever in the whole wide world...; they won't play in the dark.
After much discussion. consideration and introspection, I believe I've finally worked out why.
Trefor with an f Thomas.
Trefor, after many years of working hard for a crust, has finally made some dough, and is building his ginger bread castle on the brim of the vast expanse of the Nedlands foreshore, overlooking as it does the moon beamed fields of Palmyra across the river, glowing warmly and softly in the distance.
Trefor is an icon of the Nedlands club (and an even greater icon of Kalamunda and the other clubs he played for, but that's another story) and not a man to be trifled with.
Now Trefor would not want such an idyllic vista marred by the luminescence generated by any attempt by Nedlands to improve the standard of their ground lighting, and no doubt has made his views known in his usual endearing, yet emphatic manner.
No, better for Nedlands to train in the dark, than risk the wrath of Trefor's mighty right hook, seen so often by so many opposition players and supporters, yet, inexplicably, by so few referees.
So, no night games for Nedlands.
Geez, you're a selfish so and so, Trefor.
A great read.

Chuck Norris has the greatest Poker-Face of all time. He won the 1983 World Series of Poker, despite holding only a Joker, a Get out of Jail Free Monopoly card, a 2 of clubs, 7 of spades and a green #4 card from the game Uno.
What people may not realise is that that stunned look quite commonly seen on our dearly beloved President, Hansie's face relates to his fear of light ("Photophobia" I believe its called). Much the same as a rabbit or roo caught in a shooters spotlight.
This clearly has roots in his childhood somewhere in the dark of Africa.
Every Neddies supporter I know loves the night games. Hansie a bit out on his own here and seems to be putting his Photophobia ahead of the interests of his members. As 3rd graders, its great going along on a Friday night and watching the 1sts play whilst downing a few quiet ones. Then we get to play on the No.1 field the next day!
If there's a doctor or a shrink out there in twf land, is there any way Hansie's phobia can be cured? Other than the same fate that your average rabbit or roo in a spotlight suffers!
Hansie is too good a man to have living in a dark but comforting cupboard; he needs help.

"so you're saying he is a Scientologist ? "
I never thought of that but now that you mention it, a lot of things are starting to make sense. He runs our club like his own cult and I'm pretty sure I saw him walk on water once.
Talk about living in the dark ages!
I'd like to know Hansie's reasoning.
A couple of years ago there was a big dust up (involving spectators etc) at a Neddies / Soaks night game and a big hoo haa from Rugby HQ followed. Perhaps Hansie has been scarred for life from that experience?
It is my understanding that Nedlands have recruited strongly this year.
Perhaps they don't wish all of their imports to be be put under the spotlight, so to speak. They'll have to unveil them at some point.
Can Nedlands import more players than Cottesloe? I doubt it but I understand they are giving it a crack.
Oops, I appear to have gone off track. No lights so I wandered.
c'mon give them a break, like most people in WA they can't afford the rises in electricity
OR
maybe they're trying to claim Carbon Credits by playing only during the day to minimise their club's carbon foot print!

So you don't go to Force Games if they are on a Friday night Rex?
Much prefer to go to a Force game at night than in the day time - better atmosphere.
Where are these floozies anyway?
