The word out of RugbyWA this week is that the West Australian under 20's squad is to be extended to include 50 of the States best colts who will be subjected to an intensive skills and fitness regime under programmes designed by the Force's senior coaches. The aim is to develop a deep pool of talented under 20's at modest cost, with the best of them to be inducted in the Force's reconstructed Junior Academy over the season.
The programme will be based at the Nedland's Foreshore and will be initially supervised by Nedlands Director of Coaching and his staff. In order to ensure the success of the initiative eligible players will be selected from the clubs by the Force administration and these players will not be permitted to play club rugby unless they participate in the twice weekly training sessions at the Foreshore and are given dispensation to do so by the coaching staff.
It will be fantastic if this works out, and the media release goes on to say that the Force administration hopes to develop at least three local lads to a level where they will be serious candidates for Force selection within three years of the program commencing.
Let's hope they are right.
