    Fitness & rugby

What do you do outside of rugby training for fitness?

I used to do cross country and swimming. I still think cross country(not on pavements) or some form of long/medium distance is great training. Swimming is great not only for stamina but training for butterfly, breaststroke or crawl are great for upper body development.
    (my personal view)

I watch some 1st grade games live and on video - enough to get you jumping up and down with frustration

Push yourself to the limits. Avoid anything mid-strength.

Perhaps on a more serious note; when I was refereeing 1sts & 2nds, one night per week would be interval training at the local park and the other night would be riding my bike, without changing gears, around pretty much my whole suburb.

    Max 45 minutes per night.

Referees in the "A" panel are required to achieve at least 10.5 in the dreaded beep test and this regime was just the thing for me.

Mate if you are training to just play for Thirds or fourths then training and playing with the team is good enough
If you want to be a first grade player then you will have to double your training So for every hour you train with the team you will have to train an hour on your own. If you want to be better than the rest you are looking at doing at least 2 hours a day extra.
If you were even thinking of training to be able to compete on Force academy level then you are looking at 8 hours a day. This will include a high level of fitness and also am high level of ball skill

if you are a coach you get your to your required fitness level just by lifting the phone to your ears trying to find out where the players who are missing are and listening to the 1001 different excusues that can come up...The extra is cussing and kicking any and everything in sight

If you're in training for an Innrs tour then for every 90 minutes you spend in the pub watching a rugby match you need to have prepared in advance for 3 hours at home in a single session plus 2x tapering sessions of 60 minutes each.

Outstanding rugby try by a fat prop, puts on a scintilliating swerve scores a meat pie... Fitness is something wingers talk about at full time... not props...
