Perth rugby has been forced into a major overhaul because of the new National Rugby Championship.
RugbyWA is reviewing future seasons and has already scrapped the traditional September finals series because the competition must be completed before the opening NRC games on August 23.
Clubs have been given five options that include an earlier start to the competition and cutting the finals series from three games to two.
The new domestic competition will include teams from Perth, Canberra and Melbourne, with as many as seven sides from NSW and Queensland.
Planning for the Perth team is in its infancy, but one major decision will be where to play home games because RugbyWA cannot afford to make a loss.
Grounds will need to be secure and have suitable spectator, broadcast and lighting facilities, ruling out local rugby clubs.
The cost of the Force home ground, nib Stadium, could be restrictive unless a deal is worked out, raising the prospect of Australian Rules and local soccer venues being used.
Size could be a problem at soccer grounds because pitches for rugby should be 100m long and 70m wide, with in-goal areas at least 10m deep.
The Perth side will be closely aligned to the Force Super and extended player squads, its wider training group and academy. Local fringe players will also be given an opportunity.
Super Rugby players not in the Wallabies squad will be expected to play.
The side will not be called Western Force A.
RugbyWA could revert to WA Gold, the traditional representative team name, or Perth Spirit that was used in the ill-fated Australian Rugby Championship that lasted just one season in 2007 before it was scrapped by the ARU.

Education is Important, but Rugby is Importanter!
It had better be Perth spirit!
What are uni's grounds like?
Or the training pitch at rugby WA? Did the new ones come with some seating? Or was the only one that was there the one paly bought?
RugbyWA only has a patch of grass at the back about half pitch size.
I don't think any grounds have lights strong enough for TV (maybe the games will be Sat afternoons) and no grounds have stands and all the other infrastructure needed. It's a lot different from just sticking up a hesian fence around a ground for local games.
might be a moot point, but, Curtin are in the planning stages of "greater Curtin"
this is inclusive of a "sporting precinct", involving the already existing hockeyWA stadium, and a relocation of the existing rugby clubrooms and pitch to the west north west corner of the campus. While it is a few years off, the short of the long is: Curtin (properties and planning) are looking for people to chip in development costs, obviously with reciprocal payoffs, of use, naming rights and collaboration with the uni.
(in the case of corporate/industry involvement, the WA chem centre is a good example, in which BHP coughed up for a majority of the building costs, and our researches are then set to work on various tasks assisting the company along the way)
after talking to Pek about TRC, and how it should align with a uni, this would make perfectly good sense, while our current facilities wont stand up to TV/security/sponsor requirements, we are clearly eager to follow the path of the American Universities, lumping sports grounds on campus to attract a 'weekend' and 'afterhours' presence to our ghostly grounds.
on top of that, we've got full sports training facilities, various levels of infrastructure, a sport science/physiotherapy school, business school etc etc.
and, since this is now in writing, SURELY Id get a box for suggesting it!

Could they look into what the Glory was looking at last year and play the games at the hockey stadium on the turf? Plently of clubs up north are making the move to synthetic pitches could mix things up.

The only local football ground (the football that has a four cornered pitch) that I can think of would be Dorrien Gardens. It is secure IIRC but has seating only on one side and that is only for about 1000-1500. There is quite a bit of standing room though. Any othere secure suburban pitches out there?

Once again Nick Taylor's article starts off by trading on the negative.
You'd love to see the West start an article about Rugby in a positive way...... eg Perth rugby young guns given the opportunity to showcase their talent in a new National Rugby Competition.....

ouch, how do they make it so you do not get the carpet burn ?
Chuck Norris has the greatest Poker-Face of all time. He won the 1983 World Series of Poker, despite holding only a Joker, a Get out of Jail Free Monopoly card, a 2 of clubs, 7 of spades and a green #4 card from the game Uno.
Wests Scarborough 1st Grade juggernaut has played finals rugby each and every year since its inception and continues this remarkable feat yet again this season and unbelievably it's still rolling on and as an added little circle jerk for the masses Wests actually hold the record for the current longest unbroken finals record.
Dear Lord, if you give us back Johnny Cash, we'll give you Justin Bieber.
They don't, because you do.
but worse than that you need to play on them while they are wet, which means they are built with a slight but noticable slope towards the edges to let the water run off, now add the hard surface with a slight gradient and a bloke weighing in at 100+ kilos and you are asking for soft tissue damage in all the joints.
Plus you can't wear studs as they ruin the playing surface.
