    Sharpe and Cummins GAAAAAAWN

Nathan Sharpe to undergo shoulder surgery

    Bret Harris | October 08, 2009
    Article from: The Australian

TEST veteran Nathan Sharpe is to go undergo further shoulder surgery in a desperate bid to extend his international career.

Sharpe, 31, was this morning withdrawn from the Wallaby training squad and will miss next month's Grand Slam tour of Britain and Ireland.

The second-rower will have a shoulder reconstruction in the next few days placing him in extreme doubt to start next year's Super 14 competition which starts on February 12.

With a long history of shoulder injuries the Western Force skipper would be reluctant to return to the field unless 100 per cent.

Force team-mate Nick Cummins has also been ruled out of contention for a place in the 35-man squad to tour with a foot injury.

Wallabies coach Robbie Deans will name his touring squad tomorrow.

Unlucky for the boys but probably good news for the force that these two should hopefully be right for S14 season.

A bit more - Sharpe seems destined to spend up to six months on the sidelines

However he has accepted he needs surgery and will undergo an operation on Monday which is expected to sideline him for another three to six months.

"I had a period from when I injured it to this camp to try and get it right and it's just not improving," Sharpe told AAP on Thursday.

"Obviously there is a structural element to it.

"The surgeon will get in there and have a look at it and he will assess what he needs to do.

"The problem I have at the moment is my tendon is coming out of its groove."

    And...

Sharpe's Force team-mate, emerging winger Nick Cummins has also been ruled out of Wallabies tour contention with a foot ligament injury, which coach Robbie Deans said was similar to a problem suffered by lock James Horwill last year.

"It's not one you can take likely," Deans said.

A big issue with the Force this year will be team bonding (with so many new players) so it's not such a bad thing that Sharpie and Cummins are out. It must have been a fair while (2004?) since Nathan Sharpe last missed a Europe tour. The rest might do him good.

Let's just hope that it will take 5 or less months to heal up.

“Let me put it this way, A Springbok team contains Afrikaners, Englishmen, coloureds and blacks. It has parochial foes in Bulls, Sharks, Stormers, Cheetahs and Lions. It is a recipe for war! Yet in all the years of John Smit’s captaincy, there has never been one unhappy customer, not one voice of rebellion against his leadership. He is the glue that holds the Springboks together. The man is a legend!”- Jake White

Horwill was out injured for a pretty large chunk with his foot injury

Really bad news for the Force if Sharpie is out for 6 months - his leadership skills on and off the pitch can not be underestimated.

I think it was about 6 months - he missed a big chunk of Super 14 and even then took some weeks to get going at full tilt.

I think that's the main problem TOCC, not so much the matches missed (obviously a pain in the arse though) but the matches when they are coming back into the side and not up to full match fitness. Always concerns of (little picture) defensive lapses and (big picture) re-injury.

Could well have been a big season for Cummins this coming year, fingers crossed for a rapid recovery.

With Sharpey, would have been worse if he finally buggered it Round 1 next year, at least there is some hope of seeing him back into it during next year.

"in a desperate bid to extend his international career."
I think Bret might be after Grumbles job!
