    Poking fun at Peter

    Wherever Jake White went, there used to be a circus. Politics pervaded most of the press conferences under Jake White, with many of his press conferences spiky affairs as he defendeed himself from his detractors and back-stabbers.

    Wherever Peter de Villiers goes there are fun and games as well, but no longer for political reasons.

    His press conferences are marked with language of great colour, entirely idiosyncratic idioms and analogies, self-contradictions of epic proportions, and often with slightly bemused looks from those brave enough to take the top table with him.

    So never ones to miss a couple of moments of mirth, here are a few choice 'De Villierisms' from the past few weeks. Enjoy!

    "What we try to tell them is when you point your finger into the sky, don't concentrate on the finger because you'll miss all the heavenly glory out there." - On telling his players to enjoy life.

    “Let me put it this way, A Springbok team contains Afrikaners, Englishmen, coloureds and blacks. It has parochial foes in Bulls, Sharks, Stormers, Cheetahs and Lions. It is a recipe for war! Yet in all the years of John Smit’s captaincy, there has never been one unhappy customer, not one voice of rebellion against his leadership. He is the glue that holds the Springboks together. The man is a legend!”- Jake White

    the following is what I could find on de villiers

    De Villiers played scrum-half during the apartheid era, when the Springboks faced widespread international boycotts as the face of the white minority government, including exclusion from in the first two Rugby World Cup tournaments in 1987 and 1991.

    He coached amateur club Tygerberg in 1996 and 1997. He coached the Western Province Disas in 1997, but it was in 1998 when he had his first major appointments as assistant coach for Western Province in the Currie Cup and also the South Africa national under-19 rugby union team. He took the South Africa Under 19 team to third in the 1999 Under 19 Rugby World Championship. He coached the Falcons in the 2002 and 2003 Currie Cup campaigns before going on to coach the South Africa national under-21 rugby union team between 2004 and 2006. In the 2004 Under 21 Rugby World Championship South Africa finished third, but won it in 2005, and came second in 2006. In 2007 he was appointed coach of the Emerging Springboks and coached them to the title of the 2007 Nations Cup

    compare that with the following Jake White acheivements

    Before becoming coach of South Africa:

    * Jeppe Boys High School First XV - Hooker
    * Jeppe Old Boys Under 20 - Hooker
    * Johannesburg College of Education First XV - Hooker
    * 1982-1985 Coached Park Town Boys High First XV
    * 1986-1994 Worked as a Physical Education teacher
    * 1986-1988 Coached 14a, 15a
    * 1989-1994 Coached Jeppe Boys High School First XV.
    o Unbeaten in 1991 and 1994, beating Grey High School 46–0 in his last game as coach.
    * 1995 Attended International Coaching Congress
    * 1995-1997 Director of Coaching for Transvaal Rugby Union
    * Fitness Coach and Technical Adviser for Gauteng Lions in Super 12
    * 1997 National Coaching Congress
    * 2000 Assistant Coach to the Natal Sharks
    * 2000-2001 Springboks Assistant Coach
    * Level 4 coaching certificate

    White's notable achievements as Springbok head coach include:

    * Winning the Tri Nations (2004)
    * Winning the World Cup (2007)
    * Taking South Africa from 6th on the IRB World Rankings (2003) to 1st (2007)
    * IRB International Coach of the Year (2004, 2007)
    * Biggest score ever achieved by a Springbok side (134-3 against Uruguay in 2005)
    * First home series win against France since 1975
    * First victory over the All Blacks at Newlands since 1976
    * Consecutive wins against Australia and New Zealand for the first time since 1998
    o Most successful South African team at home in the history of Springbok rugby, undefeated at home in 11 tests (they would extend this streak to 13)
    o First South African team to beat Australia 3 times in the same year since 1971
    o First South African team to beat Australia in Australia since 1998

    Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.
