Joey's Dominate NSW's GPS XV Again

A third straight season of dominance and cricket scores for St Joseph's College in GPS rugby has been confirmed with 10 of the school's first XV players picked in the GPS firsts.

After beating Grammar 52-5 in round three, the Joey's front row of Patrick Ryan, Paul Mahoney and Patrick Hodgetts was selected, along with back-rowers James McMahon and David Armstrong, halfback Jason Ryan, five-eighth Kurtley Beale, centres Richard Gray and Afusipa Taumoepeau and fullback Peter Betham.

Along with Beale, tuck these other nine names away in the back of the brain as they will no doubt pop up in S14 Rookie Lists and Rep teams in the future.

Underdogs CHS rip up form guide

Underdogs CHS rip up form guide

Reputation, including that of St Joseph's five-eighth Kurtley Beale, who remains in the Wallabies sights, counted for little yesterday as CHS dominated their GPS counterparts for a deserved victory.

CHS had previously lost to a CAS side that went on to be soundly beaten by GPS, but the underdogs tore up the form guide to win 17-12 in Wahroonga yesterday, a scoreline that flattered the GPS XV.

NSW Academy coach Joe Barakat praised the performance of the CHS back row and the man-of-the-match, outside-centre Alfred Mafi.

The CHS back row featured Rodney Maa, Gareth Birch and Jesse Pariha, with second-rower Luke Smart also prominent.

Mafi, brother of Waratah Winston Mafi, got his chance after the withdrawal of Andrew Barrett and Rohan Kellam.
