South Africa win Bryan Habana took the blame after missing a great chance to go over for the Springboks in their 16-9 defeat to the Wallabies in Perth.
Habana looked certain to score in the corner in the second half but was nailed by Australia’s replacement centre Ryan Cross and dropped the ball.
Television match official Glenn Newman rightly disallowed the try and the Springboks struggled to open up the home side again.
“By my standards, in that situation, I would back myself to convert so I feel that I let the team down and myself,” Habana said.
“We pride ourselves on our execution but I wasn’t able to finish the job off.
“At this level you don’t get many opportunities. Things didn’t go as planned for us today, we had a couple of chances that we didn’t take and that cost us the game.”
Habana was eventually forced off with a shoulder injury on 66 minutes but of more concern for the Boks is the neck injury suffered by Schalk Burger, who missed most of the 2006 season with a cracked vertebra.
