A new rugby franchise for the South Eastern Cape in South Africa will be launched in June with the goal of eventually appearing in Super Rugby, SA Rugby announced on Tuesday.
The new initiative is a joint venture between the Eastern Province and Border Rugby Unions in consultation and with the backing of the South African Rugby Union (SARU).

Does this mean 6 SA S14 teams or will one disappear? Lions? I guess its not SANZAR approved yet...

its always puzzled me why they canned the spears... i think it was the ugly head of African politics again but not sure, the story is so convoluted i gave up trying to work out what was going on, who was sueing who, who paid off who and what the end result was..
glad to see someone else is trying. Doesnt make sense that 60% of rugby clubs and 50% of South African players hail from these areas...
why is this in the ACT Brumbies section??
the Brumbies are moving to South Africa??![]()
wow, did someone move this thread or am i just on drugs?
Does it have to be only one?
"Bloody oath we did!"

There were all kinds of dubious reasons given for canning them but I'm going with the simplest one - they wanted to make sure each of the South African "big 5" got their own franchise. Personally I agreed with that (still do) but the SARU then proceeded to completely disenfranchise the Eastern Cape, which left a sour taste.
Hopefully everyone goes about it a bit more intelligently this time...
haha, has mudskipper been banned from posting articles elsewhere on this forum?
yeah i understand the relevance this thread has to this forum, i was just wandering why you would post a article about a potential south african super14 side in the brumbies forum..
Surely if this team got included then the Super14(15?16?17?) would have to go to a conference format. Dam i hope it goes to a conference format!
You can post or create new threads anywhere, mudskipper - always have been able to since you joined. When in a forum (viewing threads), look fornear the top of the page.
Dear Lord, if you give us back Johnny Cash, we'll give you Justin Bieber.
Even an initial expansion to Super 15 would involve a de-facto conference system - I'm guessing a new South African team would come some time after that (unless it got lumped in with the Australian teams). However, is anyone confident that expansion is still happening in the current economic climate?![]()
haha, ah so mudskipper isnt banned from making new threads elsewhere, his just your typical ACT spaz...
i dont think anything is certain in the current economic climate, at the end of the day i think that the Broadcasters will also want a expansion, more games and more teams mean more pontential viewers. As long as they offer the money to go along with it then it should gain the support of SANZAR.
At the very least i expect to see a conference style competition in place, with new teams from South Africa and Japan, im still a bit unsure about a new Australia team but im pretty confident that if placed in Melbourne they will be able to secure enough sponsorship.
