Cottesloe POST Article about Subiaco Oval funding

    "Chase Rudd cash for stadium"
A Subiaco Stadium should be built - with a lot of help from the federal government, according to WA Labor Opposition and Subiaco Mayor Heather Henderson.

Ken Travers, shadow Sports Minister, said this week "I have written to the Prime Minister setting out the case for federal funding.
"Last week my letter was supported by WA Sports Minister Terry Waldron.
"But within a week his Premier, Colin Barnett, had scrapped the stadium.
"I find it quite extraordinary that the Barnett Government apparently has not even asked the federal government for help.
"A federal Labor government contributed $9million to the upgrade of Subiaco Oval in 1995.
"This stadium project would qualify for federal money because:
    - it is a major construction project
    - it will offer 2000 jobs in 2011 when the rest of the economy may be in trouble
    - it will be a community asset for many years
    etc etc.

the article goes on to say that this upgrade could maybe allow us to host Commonwealth games and FIFA soccer events.

It was to be built in 2 stages
    1. Constuction of 40 000 seats to be completed by Feb 2014
    2. stage 2 completed in 2016

Also that the stadium was to contain AFL, soccer, rugby, concerts, and international athletics.

Just thought it'd be of interest. sorry about the 'copyright' rules. its not online and i just cut out the blab

The logic of spending 1.1 billion to get 20,000 extra seats in eight years time continues to astound me.

to give you a bit of perspective, Suncorp Stadium and Skilled Park both cost around $5'300 per seat when they were built. Throw in inflation and you are probably looking at $6'500 today.

That would mean we should be able to build two dedicated stadiums seating 60000 for the price of one multipupose stadium seating 60000.

Why is it everytime I have any contact with the WA state government I walk away vowing to never again have anything to ever do with it. It's not my first time for looking at a report and recommendation to goverment and thought - you are either incompetant or you are lying.

Or both. We're talking about politicians here. Second nature to a lot of them.

the $1.1 Billion Price Tag included the purchase of the huses that had to be acquired, demolition costs for the knocking down those houses and the Old Subiaco Oval (although I would volunteer to do it for free), Improvements to the Pubic Transport Infrastructure
