Western Force receive good news re-signing flanker Sam Wykes
February 24, 2009 With Drew Mitchell and James O'Connor's futures still up in the air, the Western Force have received some good news with flanker Sam Wykes agreeing to a new two-year deal with the Super 14 club.
Wykes played nine games last season but has been grounded since August after injuring his shoulder on the Force's end-of-season development tour to the UK.
The 20-year-old, who is expected to be available for selection within a month, said he was happy to stay at the Force despite Giteau's imminent departure, which could spark an exodus of talent from the club.
"He (Giteau) is going to leave a big hole in the team," Wykes said.
"He's an awesome player and an awesome guy off the field but if I wasn't happy I wouldn't have signed for two years, so I'm very happy to stay.
"Matt's obviously a marquee player where people want to come play with him, but you've got guys like James O'Connor who are coming through and people will definitely want to play with him, so I reckon people might stay around, or should stay around.
"I came from NSW and I got my first start last year and Mitch (coach John Mitchell) gave me an opportunity, so I've got no reason to go."
