Western Force receive good news re-signing flanker Sam Wykes
February 24, 2009 With Drew Mitchell and James O'Connor's futures still up in the air, the Western Force have received some good news with flanker Sam Wykes agreeing to a new two-year deal with the Super 14 club.
Wykes played nine games last season but has been grounded since August after injuring his shoulder on the Force's end-of-season development tour to the UK.
The 20-year-old, who is expected to be available for selection within a month, said he was happy to stay at the Force despite Giteau's imminent departure, which could spark an exodus of talent from the club.
"He (Giteau) is going to leave a big hole in the team," Wykes said.
"He's an awesome player and an awesome guy off the field but if I wasn't happy I wouldn't have signed for two years, so I'm very happy to stay.
"Matt's obviously a marquee player where people want to come play with him, but you've got guys like James O'Connor who are coming through and people will definitely want to play with him, so I reckon people might stay around, or should stay around.
"I came from NSW and I got my first start last year and Mitch (coach John Mitchell) gave me an opportunity, so I've got no reason to go."
"Remember lads, rugby is a team game; all 14 of you make sure you pass the ball to ..........."

Good man Sam!!!
Now whats going on at RugbyWA with all the bad news they have been copping over Gitogate and how everyone else wants to leave why aren't they holding a press conference and yelling this great news from the roof tops as a sign of showing that the majority of players still want to play for force even without Gits!!!

I could have sworn the sky was falling in......
Thats one less player that is coming off contract that hasn't been locked in. Given our need for quality forwards, Matt Hodgson and Sam Wykes commiting til 2011 is great stuff.
Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast.
i mean it, ive never heard of him, is he young? is he good? does he have actual potential?

THE Western Force had some good news today with big flanker Sam Wykes signing a new two year deal with the Super 14 club.
........
Wykes, 21, who hopes to return to playing in the next couple of weeks after a bad shoulder injury picked up on the Force post season tour of the UK, said: "They (the Force) gave me my first shot here, I got my first start last year so I've got no reason to go."
He said losing Giteau would leave a big hole in the side.
"He's an awesome player and an awesome guy off the field but if I wasn't happy I wouldn't have signed for two years, so I'm very happy to stay.
"Matt's told us he's 100 per cent committed to us for this year .
"Matt's obviously a marquee player where people want to come play with him, but you've got guys like James O'Connor who are coming through and people will definitely want to play with him, so I reckon people might stay around, or should stay around."
