Can anyone recommend a video editing software for home movies.
Thanks in advance

"Windows Movie Maker" is a good start - it's free and reasonably easy to get something made. It also gives a good foundation for more advanced packages should you feel need to get more complex down the track.
Dear Lord, if you give us back Johnny Cash, we'll give you Justin Bieber.
I have several at home, which probably won't surprise you. VideoReDO Plus is what I use mostly. It will cost you $50 via paypal for a licence. It is very good imho, because it has an ad detector inbuilt, which makes cutting easy.
You can also try VirtualDub and the variants VirtualDubMod and VirtualDub-MPEG2. Not sure about the 2 latter, but VirtualDub proper is free. This program is primarily for converting video to AVI but it has various sorts of plugins available and you can do some form of cutting. Not as easily as the one above.

xillisoft video converter will do that. Also TMPGenc (which will only do * -> MPG, but has mux/demux and cutting facility).
Really though, if you have an avi that you want to burn to regular dvd, get a dvd authoring program (nero has somethign for this, cybersomething powerdvd, windvd, etc) which will set up a proper dvd format, convert and can burn to dvd or create to directory or iso file.

Windows MOvie Maker if you're a Windoze sort of a guy, Imovie if you're a Mac type of a guy, why start on something that isn't already installed on your computer.
