Fagan says no, Waldron yes, to Rebels

A failed bid to lure ACT Brumbies boss Andrew Fagan has resulted in the Melbourne Rebels rugby consortium appointing Brian Waldron as its inaugural chief executive.
Waldron, who has spent the past five years as the Melbourne Storm head honcho, confirmed his change of code yesterday.

With talk of signing high-profile players Johnathan Thurston and Rocky Elsom yet to result in anything official, Waldron becomes the Rebels' first big-name employee.

His resignation from the Storm is effective immediately.

The Storm wasted little time announcing a replacement, naming the club's former chief operating officer Matt Hanson as chief executive.

Fagan was hesitant to reveal details when contacted by The Canberra Times yesterday but confirmed he had been approached by the Melbourne outfit.

''I was approached but I declined,'' he said

It has been reported that Peter O'Meara will neither confirm nor deny that he was approached and refused the job, or not.

It has been further reported that Malcolm Turnbull, Gough Whitlam and H.B. Bear were also approached.

    Further useless information to follow.
