ACT Brumbies and Wallabies prop Ben Alexander has a broken hand and could miss half the Super 14 season.
Alexander suffered the injury at training on Friday.
He is booked to see a specialist on Wednesday, when it will be determined whether or not he requires surgery.
Alexander was a certain starter at loosehead prop for the Brumbies this season, but that role will now most likely be filled by Salesi Ma'afu.
Guy Shepherdson will start the season at tighthead.
Brumbies coach Andy Friend has recalled dumped prop John Ulugia into the Brumbies squad for the Super 14 season.

What a girl- he breaks his little finger and he's out for 6 weeks?
Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast.
Actually quite respect Ben - wish him luck - heard that he could be out for the entire season which would be a real loss to the Brumbies
61 years between Grand SlamsWas the wait worth it - Ya betta baby
The wheels are already coming off the Brumbies wagon. Getting the excuses in early!!!
CHEERLEADERS ROCK!!!
Alexander doesn't need an operation. Will be available for Round 2.
I wouldn't call Alexander a girl. Not so he could hear anyway.
Come on. Dave Pocock's thumb was so badly injured they couldn't put a pin in it and he's back in full contact training 6 weeks later. And a broken little finger is taking Alexander out for 4 weeks? But still I'm really just trying to stir up Muddy.
Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast.
Fair enough - mud needs stirring.
If you don't stir mud it separates into liquid and solid...
