All Blacks captain Richie McCaw is to miss the first three rounds of the Super 14 competition on a "sabbatical".
Crusaders assistant coach Daryl Gibson said McCaw was expected to return to Super 14 rugby duty for their team in the fourth round of the competition which kicks off this weekend.
"Richie's obviously taking a sabbatical in that period - normally when All Blacks take sabbaticals it can be up to six months, so we're fortunate Richie's decided that he's only taking three weeks off.
"It's pretty good and a mark of the man, really."
A round four return would see McCaw step out against the Blues in Christchurch on March 6.
Local bookmakers have installed the Crusaders as competition favourites, the return of star first five-eighth Daniel Carter from an Achilles tendon injury suffered in France seen as key.
Carter was on his ill-fated French sabbatical last year when the seven-time champions somehow scraped into fourth place while struggling on attack for the entire campaign.

Seems a bit odd. Not a proper break, more a lie-in from the off season. Strange.
Big bonus for the Highlanders, Reds and Sharks!
Feel free to have a nanna nap in Round 11 to Richie![]()

didn't he get parole this season ?
Chuck Norris has the greatest Poker-Face of all time. He won the 1983 World Series of Poker, despite holding only a Joker, a Get out of Jail Free Monopoly card, a 2 of clubs, 7 of spades and a green #4 card from the game Uno.
He's getting married
Phhht, when has that ever been an excuse!

Way to corrupt a word, though not a great surprise from Un Zud...
Sabbatical or a sabbatical (from Latin sabbaticus, from Greek sabbatikos, from Hebrew shabbat, i.e., Sabbath, literally a "ceasing") is a rest from work, or a hiatus, often lasting from two months to a year. The concept of sabbatical has a source in shmita, described several places in the Bible (Leviticus 25, for example, where there is a commandment to desist from working the fields in the seventh year). In the strict sense, therefore, sabbatical lasts a year. From Wiki.
So, sabbatical is more than just a short break where you would still be in heavy training and you don't take a sabbatical year at another club. Maybe that's why Carter got injured, he got struck down for miss use of the word![]()

It should read that he'll miss a minimum of three rounds. He might cop a few more for injuries, suspensions etc.
McCaw, dirty cheating bastard!
Actually not really dirty, just cheating!
