Palmyra flyhalf James Stannard has won the prestigious PG Hampshire Award for Best & Fairest Player in the 2006 Home Building Society Competition.
The 23 year old, who was named in the Emirates Western Force APC squad this week, polled 21 votes to win from Wests Subiaco flyhalf Aaron Broughton (14 votes) and Rockingham Number 8 Geoff Minson (13).
Having arrived in WA from Brisbane club Souths at the start of the 2006 season, Stannard lead Palmyra from consecutive wooden spoons in First Grade to the Preliminary Final, where they were beaten by eventual Premiers Wests Subiaco.
The Palmyra captain finished the season with 180 points and was the difference in a number of matches with his fine goal kicking and tactical play. Standing at just 170cm, Stannard's tenacious play has been rewarded with a three month trial in the Western Force Academy
Other Awards presented on the night went to:
Nedlands flanker Will Brock (Argonaut Gold Player of the Year),
Palmyra coach Jason Jones (Coach of the Year),
Associates scrumhalf Matt Shaw (Most Improved Player),
Palmyra winger Nems Momo (Top Try scorer),
Associates backrower Angus Nielson (Outstanding Colt),
referee Warren Lynch (Referee of the Year) and
Perth Bayswater's Puawai Hohepa (Women's Best & Fairest)
