The Kalgoorlie Stormers have claimed the 2010 Country Cup crown over the Foundation Day long weekend with a convincing 36-0 victory over Dunsborough/Bunbury in the grand final.
Eight teams from various country regions in WA descended on a cold and overcast Katanning for the tournament with the Krusher’s doing an outstanding job of hosting the tournament.
Joining the Krusher’s and Dunsborough/Bunbury were the Kalgoorlie Bushwackers, Boulder/WASM, Kalgoorlie Stormers, Esperance, Geraldton, Katanning and the WA Police team.
RugbyWA Senior Competition co-ordinator Justin Shakeshaft, commended the talent and behaviour of all teams throughout the competition.
“The carnival was played in great spirit throughout the weekend with no major injuries and no red cards issued during the carnival.”
The rugby spirit continued with plenty of players putting their hands up to assist other teams when injuries started curtailing player numbers and with the chilly Katanning weather, playing was a great option for staying warm.
Shakeshaft praised the hard work of the Katanning rugby community for their efforts.
“Well done to Wayne “Buddha” Hardie and his committee for their efforts in organising this year’s country carnival and to everyone at Katanning who ensured a good time was had by all.”
Next year’s Country Carnival will be held in the Eastern Goldfields where the Kalgoorlie Stormer’s will look to defend their crown on home soil.
