Giteau trying to do too much: Ella
August 10, 2010
FORMER Wallabies back Gary Ella has criticised Matt Giteau for overplaying his hand and stilting Australia's attack in their twin Bledisloe Cup failures.
Ella believes the misfiring backline star was feeling the pressure to perform better and, as a result, played too selfishly in the 49-28 and 20-10 losses to New Zealand.
With Quade Cooper sure to return to five-eighth against South Africa on August 28, Giteau will move from No.10.
''I just think he should underplay a little bit,'' the former Test centre said. ''There's a couple of players in the Australian team at the moment who I think are overplaying their hand.''

...actually I thought this when he was playing 10 for the
There was many a game where it seemed he had a really nifty move in his mind, so off he set with ball in hand.............and his outside backs appeared not to have much idea about what that plan was.
Giteau has had some very good performances from the 5/8 position, i remember it was only a couple of seasons ago he was touted as competiting with Carter as been the worlds best 5/8. At Super14 level he is a more then competent 5/8, but at test level against countries like South Africa and New Zealand we need a little more.
i also seem to remember as late as last year that many folks though Cooper was a muppet and would never get a spot over Beale... but things change.. often quite quickly..
Out of left field I know but I was chatting to a very tubby Mark Ella on Friday night. Real hard case bloke.
Back to the thread. It has never seemed to me like anybody outside of 10 has any idea what Gits was gunna do next. Brilliant at times, kinda selfish and tunnel visioned at other times.
There was also a time when Giteau was touted as the saviour post Gregan.
Another mistout...

Well that's a little differen, his form at 5/8 was what had some people saying he was a challenge to Carter as the worlds best 5/8.
The comments about him been the saviour to Gregan was based on nothing more then optimism

In my opinion he's never shown that sort of form in flyhalf. I think most of the hype was just that......it sold newspapers in Canberra and Sydney but not much else.
I can't remember ever thinking he was better at 10 than at 12, I think I was OK with him being 10 at the Force in the beginning, but that was more about us not having another option once Jimmy pulled stumps.
