We have just moved into a new office and are setting up our computers and I need some advice.
We have one desktop computer (main computer) which has the MYOB etc on it, plus we also run two laptops and will also have a network printer/fax.
The office is already cabled which is great, but what I want to know is do we need to have our own server onsite for one of the laptops to access the info on the main computer??
Any help appreciated![]()

didn't realise there were computer cables throughout JB O'reillys?
No - you can connect the laptop to the main computer( desktop) with the blue lan cable - via a modem - most modems have a couple of ports - like a router
Then you go into explorer on the laptop and explore to the desktop - you can also add passwords etc...

TQO don't do private work do you ...??? I am having irritating problems with my Fax/copier...sometimes the thing works sometimes it doesn't and when it doesn't is usually the most important time...
I have a dual line...two numbers on one telephone line (????) andthe one line is supposed to work the fax/copier...
I am not on the main line when I try and work the bloody (ooops!!!) thing ....
Technology great when it works....W H E N !!! AAARRGH!
When things don't work just remember that it was probably created by a male and has a problem multitasking - when it decides not to work there are 2 ways of dealing with it you can tempt it into action with some gentle tweaking of the wires etc... but when it really starts to hurt the only way to deal with him is to take him outside and hurl it at something ( Flamethrower had a nifty little tool for dealing with nuisances ) perhaps a ritual killing would be best can I suggest the 31st of October.

No - the main computer can share information with the laptops. Whilst a server would often be used in such situations, it is not a necessity. It really depends on how much you want to share, and what access restrictions (if any) you want to put on it.
One thing about a server over a desktop, is that usually no one uses a server (say for surfing the net or downloading email) and so the liklihood of malware/virus/trojan being installed and active on the server is reduced. If the desktop gets trashed - you're all out of commission.
Most important with or without a server is to make sure you have a good backup routine! If it's just predominantly MYOB data + say office documents - I'd look into an online backup, then there are no disks to mess with and if the office blows up your data is safe elsewhere.
Dear Lord, if you give us back Johnny Cash, we'll give you Justin Bieber.
You wouldn't have all these problems if there was a nationwide fiber optic network in place.
