Fiji's military regime demanded that the Fijian Rugby Union board be replaced if the sport wanted government funding for this year's Rugby World Cup.
Sports Minister Filipe Bole said he was concerned at official findings the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) mismanaged a fundraising lottery and would withhold F$3 million ($1.6 million) in grants until those responsible departed.
"The provision of funding is conditional upon the change of FRU administration and the formation of a new FRU board," Bole said in a statement.
He said the FRU needed to implement change at the top to ensure the national rugby team received adequate resources to prepare for the World Cup.

Isn't it wonderful the pot calling the kettle black - in a demoracy there would be a court case followed by seizure of assets and the lawyers would make heaps of money.
Does this mean that Fiji won't go to the RWC?

Portugal would hope so!

I think another coup is needed!
They never go out of fashion, a kind of tourism venture with the influx of media dollars...

Portugal is one of those countries that has helped make the GFC - so if they got in it would be a major media coup - watch this space

I think it's a little harsh blaming Portugal for the GFC - their economy is something around a quarter to a fifth of Australia's (or about 1.5% of the USA - List_of_countries_by_GDP). They've been hit hard and early by the GFC because their economy is so small, it has no slack.
It's a bit like blaming Tuvalu for global warming because they'll be first underwater if the sea levels rise.
Having a coup in Fiji between the army and rugby players would be quite difficult, wouldn't it? I thought most of them are the same people!
the sports minister is miffed that he didn't get a cut of the lottery takings!
or the trip to Hong Kong
(btw portugal is one of the PIGs portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain - the subprime morgages in the US technically caused the GFC however the PIGs in Europe are helping to elongate the effect as they are heavily in debt - portugal is tipped to be next for a Eurozone bailout similar to the one Ireland had last month)
