January inexorably rolls around again and the club rugby aficionados start to wander down to their home paddocks to observe with trepidation the depleted stock of prospective first team starters amongst the great unwashed lumbering about the hallowed grounds.
"Can't see much here" grumbles Toddy at Hartfield.
"Piss poor we don't have our star recruits here before the first round starts" mutters Bradbury at the foreshore.
"Is this what I paid for?" bellows Leon at Kingsway.
"Thank God for the Force to fall back on" says a stressed Denny Bennetts at Soaks.
"Thank God for rubber rules" says a gloomy Milton at Harvey Field.
"Do we even have a recruiting officer this year?" splutters a despondent Siddons at Tompkins.
And so it goes on, at every club in the competition.
But these are perceptions. What is the reality?
I hear recruiting is going slowly this season, especially from overseas, and that local cannibalism is re-emerging as the means of survival at some clubs. What is the true story behind the defection to Wanneroo of Kala's wunderkind new fullback, after he travelled to the Singapore Sevens at Cottesloe's expense? Is KK turning from dark green to sea blue this year? Time will no doubt reveal all.
It's surprising, really, if overseas recruiting is as meagre as it appears, as the rest of the world's (and Australia's) economy is going down the gurgler. I would have thought underpaid stars from all the rugby nations would be lining up for the largess the local clubs appear able to dispense. You just never can tell.
Anyway, within the next few weeks most of the secrets, rumours and innuendos will be public knowledge, and we shall wonder no more.
Of course, if those truly in the know were to spill the beans here earlier, I for one would be very interested and grateful.
You could even use a pseudonym, Hansie.
we only have about seven ex All Black triallists this season
ps Fulvio, dont play Toddy at golf,he's a bloody burglar
I hope they're all as good as you were, Gunny.
ps Don't play golf, but he was pretty hopeless at indoor cricket back in the day.
Haven't seen Bradbury at the foreshore yet....mind you haven't seen anyone at the foreshore.... Gawd I hope we have some players for 2011!!!!
Aw come on Hansie, if you ask Elwie nicely he might give you a couple back.
What's his number? By the way Fulvio, we need your pre-season predictions, summations, bolters and why.
I'm desperately afraid my current fonts of information have all but dried up, Hansie.
Would you like to be my Nedlands spy this year? it would save me having to camp out in what's left of Steve's car park in disguise each Thursday if you were.
I was going to ask Pieter to do the same thing at Perth for me, but it appears The Force Guy is prepared to do it online here for nothing, so that's one problem solved, at least.
Do you think Action Hardcore will rat on Kala for me, or, in the prison parlance he is so familiar with, will he be "staunch"? I suppose I could pay him in protein shakes and home drawn tattoos.
I'm also trying to develop a mole within the Force upper hierarchy since my last one left for South Africa, but I really can't afford to pay much in real cash.
As you can see, I'm pretty much up against it at the moment, so any help you can offer will be appreciated.
My mission is to provide you all with the facts and unbiased, unemotional and brutally accurate reportage. You can all do your part to ensure this is achieved by providing the metaphoric wheat for my information mill to grind.
Fulvio, Happy to answer any questions, provide any feedback but reticent to offer any opinion as clearly it would be biased.
Ah, you know me well, Gigs.
