St.George Reds eye the record books as they prepare for the Bulls
The St.George Reds want to re-write the record books next weekend in front of a packed Suncorp Stadium crowd by beating the Bulls to make it six straight wins in a row.
Never before has a Reds side won six games straight and only three times before have the Reds won five in a row.
Overnight, in front of a passionate South African crowd, the Reds stunned the locals and the Stormers with an incredible display of tactical rugby to run out 19-6 winners.
Reds Captain James Horwill summed it up when he said the boys had talked the talk then walked the walk to beat the Stormers at their own game.
Queensland and Wallaby legend Tim Horan described the effort as simply the best defence effort in five or six years and one of the best games of Super Rugby this season.
“To win two out of two in South Africa is very difficult – when one of those teams is the Stormers at their own ground its very impressive.
“They were dynamic and bustling in defence and now they have the momentum. This was the litmus test for the forwards and they passed in one of the hardest places to win in world rugby.”
The win puts the Reds at the top of the Super Rugby competition table with the Crusaders – a feat not achieved by the Reds since 1999.
The stunning display of Rugby silenced the crowd and the critics who claimed the Reds had only beaten sides from the lower half of the competition. Until last night the Stormers had been unbeaten.
Reds Head Coach Ewen McKenzie praised all his players saying it was the best win by the team since his arrival in Queensland.
“It was a huge win. I asked them to step up and they did. It was tactical and it was physical and to come out of it with no injuries sets us up for a critical game at Suncorp Stadium against the Bulls on Saturday night.”
The team begins their journey back home tonight arriving back in Brisbane tomorrow afternoon at about 5:45pm.
