The Wallabies have suffered a major Rugby World Cup blow with scans revealing gun winger Digby Ioane has a fractured thumb requiring surgery.
The injury appears likely to rule Ioane out for the rest of the tournament.
He suffered the fracture while playing a starring role in Australia's opening 32-6 win over Italy on Sunday.
Australia's leading scorer during the Tri Nations tournament, Ioane scored one try and made a great break to set up another in the impressive win.
With Ioane sidelined, Drew Mitchell could be in line for a recall to the vacant left wing after recovering from his dislocated ankle.
James O'Connor was already in line for a return to Australia's starting line-up on the other wing after also excelling when he came on in the 48th minute at North Harbour Stadium.
O'Connor crossed for a try and landed three conversions and is expected to start against Ireland, with Adam Ashley-Cooper reverting to outside centre and Anthony Faingaa facing relegation.

other reports indicate he may be fit for the quarter final
Bit of a shame. Wonder who will replace him if he does get sent home - Gits?

Nah, Mitchell......has to be, drew was named, so must be pretty close to fit.....even on one leg drew's the better option
Oh, i get the question now, sorry......still wouldn't pick Gits though, more likely a finisher

He's home sick
What are the rules on replacements? Didn't it use to be after a certain date there was no replacements to the originally nominated squad?
The rule is you can replace an injured player with who ever you want but the player that has been replaced can not return even is someone else, or even the player that replaced him gets an injury. I think they will wait and see how it all pans out over the next few days to see if it is likely he can return before making a hasty decision whether to replace him or not.

Their next choice will already be in the squad, essentially it gives them carte Blanche to replace him with anybody they want if there's an issue with somebody underperforming. The part of the rule I'm not sure on is whether people named as injured such as taf and drew can be replaced in the same way, or do they need to suffer another injury?
