When using onomatopoeia, it is perfectly acceptable to double and even treble letters to clarify the emphasis of a syllable. Even the venerable boom can be written boooooom in a colloquial sense. However I do entertain your assertion that the grammatically most common spelling of the exclamation does indeed contain a single consonant.

I thought so as well, but have had high level advice to suggest that 'however' is an exception to that rule.
