There has been a fair bit of talk around about how much travel different teams undertake and the toll it takes on bodies. I decided to do a bit of an analysis on just how much travel teams have to do.
I decided to use this season's fixtures (ie 2012) and did a simple distance "as the crow flies" between the cities as my "distance flown" (thanks google earth). A rough and ready way of doing it but lacking sufficient time I decided this would give a good approximation. I decided to arbitrarily pit the Sharks, Crusaders, Reds and Force against one another. I give you my results which may not shock too many diehard force supporters...
Force - 48,000 km
Crusaders - 36,000 km
Reds - 35,000 km
Sharks - 31,000 km
As you can see, the Force are travelling about a third more than the nearest rival. If you have read Matt Hodgson's article about the horrors of travel http://www.matthodgson.com.au/rugby/...up-in-the-air/ then you will see that this puts us at a huge disadvantage. Although, we have an obvious exception to this rule last year when the Crusaders travelled a whopping 76,000 km in 2011 and were still able to make it to the final...
