Subi Post published this article about Mike Brandler who played for the Soaks - it's a really sad story and shows how unfair life can be! He's been treated pretty badly by the system and deserves much better. It's too degrading to have to go through this kind of shit in our wealthy society. My heart goes out to him and good on Mike Foley and the guys from the Force for pitching in. I reckon we all need to give him a helping hand.

Did anyone manage to get to the dinner for Mike last night? If so - how'd it go and any pics?
The following was sent today from Geoff Stooke who was very much part of the organising of the dinner last night....
Thank you to all those who supported the fundraising dinner held last night to assist Mike randler- 142 attended!
Through the generosity of those who attended, those who contributed cash in lieu of attending & those who donated items for the auctions, raffles & spot prize we raised over $43,000 for the Michael Brandler Trust Fund- an exceptional result that exceeded our most optimistic expectations!
A special thank you to all those who donated items & all the items contributed to the final result. A list of the donations is attached & I would like to mention a few specifically:
- The Seven Nights at the luxurious Karma Kandara Resort in Bali was purchased for $8,500
- The Associates jersey signed by Ben Roberts-Smith VC MG & Mark Donaldson VC was purchased for $12,000 (purchased by a syndicate of members from Associates RUFC for the Associates RUFC)
- All tickets in the raffles for the Kailis Pearl & the Three Nights at the Karma Rottnest Lodge were sold & together the two grossed over $5,000
Special thanks must also go to the ‘Rugby Panel’ of Michael Foley, Chris Webb & Matt Hodgson who entertained & gave everyone an insight into what is happening at the Emirates Western Force; to Peter Bailey who conducted a very successful auction & to Scott Staniforth who did a great job as MC & with his searching interview of the ‘Rugby Panel’.
The funds raised last night, together with cash donations previously made to the Trust over the past few months, will mean that the Trust now has a cash balance of over $60,000. The Trustees will carefully manage these funds to assist Mike in maintaining the quality of life he now enjoys at the Quadriplegic Centre at Shenton Park.
The dinner was attended by representatives of most rugby clubs in Perth & the support of the broader ‘rugby family’ was greatly appreciated. Mike made mention of this when he spoke near the end of the night! Whilst we all enjoy professional rugby & the performances of many elite athletes in rugby, last night provided a great example of camaraderie that still exists within the grassroots of our great game.
Thank you again for your support & generosity.

I missed this when first posted. I know Mike from "way back when"and wasn't aware of his situation. (turns out I couldn't make it anyway)
I'm glad the night had such support and wish the Big Fella well.
Huge shame we couldn't have got a table there...![]()
