The rugby rumour mill can lead you down weird and wonderful paths, but I came across one recently that, for the sake of New South Wales Waratahs fans and Australia, I really hope is true.
The mail around bonuses in the contract of new Tahs coach Michael Cheika is they are not based on a win/loss record, as it customary, but are instead based on how many people turn up to watch games.
If that's true, and I hope it is, it is a stroke of genius. What such a move could do is remove the "fear of losing" factor for Cheika, which has stifled far too many people at NSW Rugby in recent times.
It could give Cheika the licence to bring in a brand of rugby that puts bums on seats, and we've heard promising talk from within the camp already that points to some open, exciting rugby from the Waratahs in 2013.
If it is not right, then it ought to be. The Waratahs desperately need to bring that brand of rugby in 2013, for two reasons. It is a) the best way to win rugby games and b) bring back fans.
