First the All Blacks devoured the Wallabies, now hungry Wellingtonians are looking to do the same.
Wallaby burgers went on sale at the Edward St cafe Meow last night as a tribute to the All Blacks ahead of Saturday's Bledisloe Cup clash in Wellington.
The burgers will be served with the usual fare of lettuce, cheese and tomato - with an egg if requested - cafe owner and avid All Blacks fan Damian Jones said.
"Egg on the face is part of the optional egg. If Quade Cooper wants to come in and get some egg on his wallaby, he is welcome."
Wellington Restaurant Association branch president Mike Egan said the tongue-in-cheek delicacy would give people a chance to try something different.
"It would be quite funny if they did it on toast, because that's what the Wallabies will be this weekend.
"Good on them for having a little bit of creativity, I wouldn't mind trying one."
Mr Jones last offered up the wallaby burger in the buildup to Wellington's 2009 Bledisloe Cup match. While wallaby wontons were available all year round, extra meat had to be obtained from the South Island for the burgers.
Wallaby meat was lean and healthy, he said. "Back in the old days, they were used for dog tucker but they make a really good burger. It's a bit like venison."
A wallaby burger with a side of fries would cost $11 and had a lean, gamey taste - as well as a sense of victory, he said.

Chuck Norris has the greatest Poker-Face of all time. He won the 1983 World Series of Poker, despite holding only a Joker, a Get out of Jail Free Monopoly card, a 2 of clubs, 7 of spades and a green #4 card from the game Uno.
it's crown land out there!
I ate (fresh) Wallaby in Tassie. were out roo shooting, and bagged two reasonable wallabies, chop the hind and tail into 'bits', pop them in a pan half full of bubbling red wine and various herbs, cook on oven setting: "fuck that fire is huge" for a few minutes, and gobble it all up!
was damn delicious. definitely in my top 3, "most tender and tasty meaty meals"
and to quote my Rabble mates reply: "we would do the same, but Kiwis are tasteless" haha.
