I don't see how the professional game can survive in Australia with these numbers.![]()
Same way it's always survived - Foxtel money.
Super Rugby can't even test the water for FTA TV whilst Fox has it's stranglehold. I'd guess the only thing that might throw a scare into Fox would be if ratings data start to show a fall in subscribers who specifically joined (and then left for Super Rugby coverage). Then they might allow some FTA coverage in an attempt to grow the market as with the A League.
Of course they might, though it's unlikely ATM, decide it's not worth the risks and simply walk away instead. That is a risk with making knee-jerk changes to the Super Rugby structure too.

2013–14 Heineken Cup
Matches played - 79
Average attendance - 14,278 per match
Aviva Premiership Rugby average attendance for 2013/14 = 12,252 (135 matches)
RaboDirect Pro 12 average attendance for 2013/14 = 8,205 (135 matches)
For 'rugby heartland' it would be nice if the Tahs numbers looked more like the Reds numbers. Too many false dawns maybe.
Bit sad that matches against Rebels drew the lowest numbers.
Rebels crowds had the least variation for home games though.
I imagine there is a direct link between smallest crowd for each team and membership numbers.
Ravi - Any books on member numbers for 2015?
Dear Lord, if you give us back Johnny Cash, we'll give you Justin Bieber.
Rebels also had a lot (all?) their home games on a Friday night, which doesn't suit a lot of people. Guess that's coz of the AFL taking up the Sat and Sun spots?
Wow at the number of games played in the European leagues compared to ours. And they still averaged similar attendance figures per game!
I thought we were just talking home games??
Every game is a home game to someone (well, except for the Spirit's game in Adelaide!)

REDS - Min 23,800; Av 28,500; Max 36,200
TAHS - Min 12,500; Av 19,000; Max 29,000
FORCE - Min 9,900; Av 12,800; Max 16,400
BRUMS - Min 7,100; Av 12,500; Max 17,000
REBS - Min 10,000; Av 11,400; Max 13,900
Observations:
1. Waratahs pull good crowds when playing away from home.
2. Rebels pull poor crowds when playing away from home.
3. Visiting NZ teams (esp Chiefs & Crusaders) pull close to Max crowds.
4. Min crowd of 7,100 - Brumbies vs Blues.
5. Max crowd of 36,200 - Reds vs Tahs.
Man, I wish we could get those crowds back up. I'd really like to know if RugbyWA can go after the ex-members who were dissatisfied with Subiaco Oval.
