DYLAN TIMU CLAIMS 2014 PG HAMPSHIRE AWARD
Perth Bayswater utility back, Dylan Timu, has been crowned the PG Hampshire Award winner at the 2014 RugbyWA Awards Breakfast at the WA Basketball Centre this morning.
The Perth Bayswater flyhalf/fullback was a key player in the club’s mid-season revival before missing out on the finals, and finished the season with 59 points, including four tries.
After a career disrupted by injury, Timu played his 50th senior match for the club in the club’s Round Nine 14-all draw with Nedlands at The Foreshore, scoring nine points.
The PG Hampshire Award is voted upon by referees on a 3-2-1 basis, with Timu finishing with 16 points ahead of Wests Scarborough’s Chance Bunce (12) and Kalamunda’s Ryan Black (11).
First-year head coach Gus Martyn was recognised as the Coach of the Year after guiding Nedlands to the Pindan Premier Grade minor premiership on the back of 13 wins and a draw during the regular season. Nedlands missed the opportunity to defend their 2013 title after falling by one-point to Cottesloe in their preliminary final. Martyn also led the WA Under 17’s team at the 2014 Junior Gold Cup where they took out the national championship in its inaugural year.
UWA fullback Christian Joubert and Nedlands scrumhalf Michael Ruru shared the honour of the Pindan Premier Grade’s Top Try Scorer, after each crossing 15 times during the season. This is the second year that Joubert has won the award after scoring 16 tries in 2013, while his 2014 haul included two doubles and two three-try performances in Round 13 and 15. Ruru’s climb up the try-scorer’s list was aided by five tries in Neddies’ 92-12 win over Wanneroo.
UWA winger Levon Kvas-Rothwell took out the Top Points Scorer Award, accumulating 171 points this season, crossing for three tries and kicking 42 conversions and 24 penalties.
Nedlands back-rower Andries van der Westhuizen was recognised for his strong season in claiming the Most Improved Player Award. After graduating from Colts in 2012 and Reserve Grade in 2013, van der Westhuizen has been amongst Nedlands’ most consistent performers, playing nearly every minute of the season and scoring three tries.
Australian representative Rebecca Clough has been awarded the Women’s Fairest & Best Player after a strong season with Cottesloe. Clough was selected for her second Women’s Rugby World Cup in France with the Wallaroos, starting in the second row in each of Australia’s Test matches.
RugbyWA Board member, Charles Fear, was recognised for his service as a player, coach, referee, committee member, board member and sponsor of rugby in Western Australia with Life Membership to RugbyWA. Fear began his WA rugby journey playing for Western Suburbs and Associates and was a member of the 1976 Premier Grade championship side with Western Suburbs. After hanging up the boots, Fear took up the whistle and has been refereeing regularly for more than 10 years. He was the secretary of the WARU Executive from 1977-78, member of the Referees Executive in 2005 and President of the Referees Association from 2006-08 and has been a very active member of the RugbyWA Board for seven years. He has been a strong supporter of rugby over the years, sponsoring the referees, Western Australian representative teams and most recently a jersey partner of the Western Force in 2014 through his company Argonaut.
Referee Graham Cooper has won the Referee Award for the second year in a row, recognised for his consistency in officiating at a local, national and international level. The 25-year-old was recognised as the top referee in the state for his performances in the Pindan Premier Grade as well as officiating in several Super Rugby fixtures during the season and is currently in China refereeing the 2014 Youth Olympics.
In the club awards, Nedlands were crowned 2014 Premiership Club Champions after qualifying for the Pindan Premier Grade finals for the 32nd consecutive year. While the minor premiers were knocked out by Cottesloe in the last weekend’s preliminary final, the club will be represented in this weekend’s grand finals by their Goodlife Health Clubs Under 19 and Championship A sides.
ARKs have been recognised as 2014 Championship Club Champions and will be seeking back-to-back premierships in Saturday’s Championship B Grade grand final, after boasting an undefeated season thus far in 2014. The club’s Championship A Grade side also qualified for the finals but were knocked out by Mandurah in last weekend’s preliminary final.
The Champion Club – which takes into consideration the performances at both senior and junior level – was won by Palmyra for the second year running. Palmyra competed in each grade in the senior men’s competitions, with the club to contest Sunday’s Reserve Grade and the Goodlife Health Clubs Under 19 grand finals, with their Under 19 side already claiming the minor premiership. The club has a healthy junior contingent coming through the ranks with sides in most age groups of Bankwest Junior Rugby.

Surely the winner or at least top 3 should be in the spirit squad
none of the players in the top 6 are in the Spirit squad.
