Waratahs name opening squad
Tuesday, February 7, 2006
Lock Will Caldwell is the one debutant in the Waratahs team for its opening Super 14 rugby match of the season against Queensland in Brisbane on Saturday.
Caldwell is the only non-Wallaby in a powerful pack.
Tim Donnelly has won the contentious five-eighth spot with one of the other contenders, Sam Norton-Knight, chosen at fullback.
The Waratahs other major recruit, Wendell Sailor, has been named on the wing, while regular winger, Lote Tuqiri, has been named in the centres.
Team: Sam Norton-Knight, Wendell Sailor, Lote Tuqiri, Morgan Turinui, Peter Hewat, Tim Donnelly, Chris Whitaker (c), David Lyons, Phil Waugh, Rocky Elsom, Daniel Vickerman, Will Caldwell, Al Baxter, Adam Freier, Matt Dunning.
Just reading elsewhere that Lote is in doubt with an "illness" of some sort.
Be a shame for the game if he's missing but I wish they would scrape the whole Lote for 13 project, he's not suitably skilled as a serious option.
Interesting use of Sam NK and Hewat especially after his success at 15 last year.
A powerful back row and excellent lineout.
Good luck to Caldwell on debut!
I can't see the Reds getting this one but they often suprise playing on pure heart.
Do you know the bench Mambo?
Nope - I have been trying to find it myself. I thought that it was interesting that Frier got the nod as hooker, I thought that McKenzie might have trailed more with Polota-Nau in that position. But Frier has done nothing wrong in the past.
As far as Hewat is concerned - does anyone in the ARU actually rate him. Seems that he is just becoming a bit of a hole filler....
Hewat- Pretty sure Link rates him, he gave him a fair go last year.
The Polota-Nau v Freier contest will be of great interest all year for Australian supporters.
I see Polota-Nau as Freier with scrum skills and size, that is he is just as mobile and possibly more skillful in the loose, passing etc.
Freier will not be an option for the Wallabies for Connolly I would think so hopefully Polota_Nau's development isn't hampered this year by spending too much time on the bench.
The Reds would rate in the easier half of the Tahs matches this season so either Polota-Nau isn't going to be tested, or in fact he is already the first pick and Freier is getting arun in the easier match!
Last year Freier and Cannon alternated at selection regularly.
All part of Link's "Grand new plan" I guess.
Well done on reaching Rookie too Mambo![]()

Dear Lord, if you give us back Johnny Cash, we'll give you Justin Bieber.
Yup. It'll be on VHS but I'm gonna tranfer it to DVD.
Can't wait to see the look on Buddha's face when his team loses. He can bugger off back to planet cheesecake.
I'll let him know how you feel at the leederville tomorrow ...![]()

Please do. His "Brokeback Mountain" joke was most ill-timed considering everyone knows the gay cowboys come from North Queensland.
I'd love it if someone has the guts to ask him if he'd be willing to wear a Tahs jersey if the Reds lose this weekend.
Thanks pal!Originally Posted by Sagerian

I like the photos page on your site. Good idea for a section on here.
