They've just locked in their new chief executive - now it's a question of getting the right coach if the Queensland Reds hope to lure Quade Cooper back to the Super Rugby club.
Radio industry boss Richard Barker was named on Thursday as the new CEO of the Queensland Rugby Union.
Barker - a former captain of the Queensland Country team in the mid-1980s - will replace departed Jim Carmichael within the next six to eight weeks.
By that time the Reds are also hoping to have confirmed who'll take over the Reds' coaching role, with Matt O'Connor and Nick Stiles sharing the position in an interim basis since Richard Graham's sacking in March.
Barker is expected to have some say in who gets the nod as coach but QRU chairman Damien Frawley said a panel appointed to assist in the search will play the major role.
Frawley says finding the right man for the position will be critical to ensuring the Reds can attract major targets such as Cooper.
"The things that attract players are you've got a good coach, you've got a good list and you've got good people around them that they want to play with," Frawley said.
"Do players get that concerned by what happens up here in this building? I doubt it."
Barker's first task will be to steady the ship at Ballymore, where there have been up to eight recent redundancies.
Frawley admitted there had been a major drop in revenue at the Reds, with home crowd averages down and a loss of $1.48 million posted last year.
"I know there's a lot of loyalty that we can build upon," Barker said.
"There's a lot of things that are happening, but if we can get them all aligned, then the results will come.
"Communication to the members is important and giving them some news which is going to keep them coming back is important ... there's a lot of things we can do to increase and strengthen that relationship."

Interesting that Frawley acknowledges that the coach has a major impact on recruiting players.
"Frawley says finding the right man for the position will be critical to ensuring the Reds can attract major targets such as Cooper."
I wonder if the Force haven't been able to attract major targets because of the last 2 dud coaches that we have had (Graham & Foley), and whether our Board can understand this basic fact.
As long as the ARU understands, we'll be right![]()

If the Reds don't give Stiles the job then they're insane.
I don't know the man and can't say what he's like in person but if his success with the NRC team and the improvement in the Reds since they ditched Graham is any indication then he's the man for the job.
what happens if the Reds hire Tom Fern?

"Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done! Now if you know what you’re worth then go out and get what you’re worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain’t you! You’re better than that!" - Rocky Balboa
A good possible coach to look at is Adrian Thompson current Aust U/20 coach, 2013 to Present coached the first Aust U/20 side to ever beat the NZ U/20's this year.
Coach At Easts in Brisbane 1999 & 2000 Premiership in 1999.
Assistant at the Reds 2002 to 2004 Under 3 head coaches, McBain, Slack & Miller
Head Coach Australia A 2003 & 2004
Head Coach Kyuden Voltex in Japan 2005 to 2011 Getting them into the Top League
Coach at the ARU HPU 2011 to 2013.
This guy would have an enormous amount of knowledge about the current younger crop players in Australia.
Great suggestion, not mention he has already been part of the ARU set up![]()

I think Nick Stiles has more than earned his stripes. Really hope he gets the Reds gig. He won't be coming back to WA anytime soon for family reasons. That said, he did love being in WA.
Proudly Western Australian; Proudly supporting Western Australian rugby
And if the Reds are even more strapped for cash, how are they ab.e to offer Cooper a contract to come back along with the other players supposed to also be joining the Reds. Laying off ALL the office staff perhaps?
Haven't you learned not to bring logic into an argument in support of Queensland
